How can I run my Basler scout IEEE 1394b camera at full FireWire-b speed?

Starting with Windows XP Service Pack 2 and continuing that in Windows Vista and Windows 7 Microsoft does not support the full bandwidth of IEEE 1394b (FireWire-b).

Hence, if you installed an IEEE 1394b (FireWire-b) adapter card on a PC with one of the above mentioned operating systems, you will notice that any FireWire-b device attached to the PC, e.g. a Basler scout IEEE 1394b camera, will reduce its transmission rate to e.g. S100 (100 Mbit/s) on Windows XP SP2/3/4 or S400 (400 Mbit/s) on Windows 7. This happens even though the 1394b device should be capable of transmitting data at rates of up to 800 Mbit/s, i.e. the so-called S800 speed.

The speed reduction is the result of a limitation that was introduced in Windows Service Pack 2. To regain the ability to run at full S800 speed, we recommend using the Basler pylon Camera Software Suite (version 2.0 or newer), which includes a unique pylon 1394 Bus driver that supports the full S800 speed.


Starting with Windows 8 Microsoft discontinued the support of the IEEE 1394 OHCI (Legacy) bus driver, which prevents using any IEEE 1394 based cameras. To use your Basler scout IEEE 1394b camera at all and with full S800 speed, we recommend using the pylon 1394 Bus driver which is part of the Basler pylon Camera Software Suite.
