3D Automated Optical Inspection

3D Automated Optical Inspection (3D AOI) provides true volumetric height information, allowing it to detect any quality problems with Surface Mount Technology (SMT) components on circuit boards. It is always used for pre-reflow/post-reflow soldering stages. Using a combination of 2D and 3D AOI technology is the best way to ensure detection of all visible defect features.

Vision configuration of 3D-AOI Systems

Multi-angle camera systems for true volumetric height measurements - A single orthogonal (vertical) top view camera with either 4 side projectors or 4 side cameras provide front, rear, left and right viewing angles. Using multi-angled colored lighting also improves image quality for 3D-AOI systems.

Common inspection areas include: Package Coplanarity, Lifted Lead, Absence and Presence, Tombstone / Billboard, and Foreign Object Debris

Common Optical Inspection Pain-Points

Challenges

  • Smaller components with greater welding density require inspection equipment with both higher resolution and higher frame rates to meet production requirements.
  • Higher image quality usually requires a camera with a large sensor coupled with a large mount lens, which increases costs.
  • Not all products are compatible, making it more challenging to select and integrate the right products. The situation is made worse with high stability required of AOI inspection.

Recommended Cameras and Acquisition Cards

Choosing a suitable system resolution is one of the key parameters to consider when selecting your AOI system. This typically involves determining the required inspection speed, inspection accuracy, and the size of the smallest component used on the PCB.

The resolution of the camera sensor determines the field of view given the AOI system’s imaging resolution. Larger field-of-views (FOVs) mean the PCB can be scanned using fewer images, but cameras with higher pixels also need more time to acquire each image. Although cameras with lower pixels have smaller FOVs, they need much less time to capture a new frame. The resulting higher frame rate can be used to cover a large PCB area using dynamic imaging without stopping to take each frame.

Ultimately, selecting your AOI system requires balancing these key parameters to meet your application needs.
