Vision Systems and Industry 4.0: Opportunities for a Smart Factory
With the introduction of “smart” manufacturing organization in connection with Industry 4.0, the setup of factories will change and advance significantly in the future. Many modern factories are already heavily automated today. The complex sub-systems required for the regulation and control of production, particularly the vision systems, contain independent components and control units that share information via different interfaces. This results in a proprietary system landscape whose maintenance and configuration requires a great deal of avoidable effort.
Interesting solutions are currently in development to simplify this system landscape. As a new machine language, OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) is an important step in this direction, making it possible to connect the individual sub-systems within the factory setup much more easily in the future. In this approach, so-called companion specifications (such as those for vision systems or in the robotics area) make it possible to connect a growing amount of sub-systems to the standard, thus enabling significantly more efficient systems.
In our White Paper, we describe a current factory setup and the “smart” setup of Industry 4.0 with OPC UA and present their benefits.
