Global Shutter, Rolling Shutter: White Paper Update
The enormous technological progress in modern CMOS sensors also resulted in a growing prevalence of rolling shutter technology for a variety of applications in industrial image processing. For conditions in which only sensors with global shutters were previously considered, rolling shutter sensors are often just as well-suited and even offer benefits in some respects, for example with cost. At the same time, CMOS sensors such as those from Sony’s Pregius line or the PYTHON sensors from ON Semiconductor now also have global shutters, a feature which was once reserved exclusively for CCD technology.
In view of these changes, Basler’s Product Manager Dominik Lappenküper has thoroughly revised and updated the White Paper “Global Shutter, Rolling Shutter – Functionality and Characteristics of Two Exposure Methods” and adapted it to the current state of technology. He compares different rolling shutter sensors based on their readout times and takes a close look at the difference between the rolling shutter effect and motion blur.
