Maximum bandwidth measurements of USB 3.0 host controllers

The document includes results of measurements of maximum available bandwidths for a selection of USB 3.0 host controllers. In addition, the possible effects of some factors on bandwidth were investigated that may result from some factors. These include restricted compatibilities of the components involved, version of the computer’s PCIe bus and network architecture. Some incompatibilities of host controllers with certain operating systems are mentioned.
The tests were carried out using USB 3.0 host controllers from ASMedia, Etron, Fresco, Intel, Renesas, Texas Instruments and VIA, selected Basler ace USB 3.0 cameras, and USB 3.0 cables from the Basler accessories portfolio.
Some measurements of CPU load were performed to check the positive effect of the “zero copy” mechanism used by Basler ace USB 3.0 cameras and Basler pylon software.
