Accurate MTF Measurement of Smartphone Camera Optics
What is the inspection of high-resolution smartphone optics all about?
Smartphone camera lens quality is more important now than ever, due to the ever-increasing resolution of today's mobile phone cameras. MTF measurement technology is widely used to evaluate and characterize smartphone camera optics. To manufacture such high-precision measurement instruments, stable and high-quality vision systems are essential. YunXian, a start-up MTF measurement instrument manufacturer in China, relied on Basler’s experience and quality vision products to win their market share in the industry.
What should be considered when inspecting high-resolution smartphone optics?
To accurately evaluate high-resolution smartphone optics, high measurement point density is required. This means an MTF measurement instrument needs more than a dozen field positions (cameras) to inspect multiple positions on the lens, from center to edge. In this vision task, multiple industrial cameras need to be triggered at the same time, and the images acquired from each camera should be highly consistent to ensure accurate MTF measurement results.
MTF measuring device with image processing solution from Basler
Inside an MTF measurement instrument, a point light source is first diffused to homogenize the illumination, and then collimated, before going through the lens to be measured. Next, the vision component comes in to re-image the focal spot via a microscope onto the camera sensor. Finally, the image will be transmitted to a computer to analyze the light intensity distribution with software that calculates the MTF value.
YunXian developed their MTF measurement instrument using a vision solution provided by Basler. The solution comes with hardware components including ace USB 3.0 industrial cameras, Basler Standard lenses, and Basler Premium cables, as well as pylon software. The images of each point are taken with different working distances to calculate the accurate MTF value of the tested lens using YunXian’s own algorithm.
