Telecentric Lenses

For high-precision dimensional measurements

If your vision application requires precise measurements, a telecentric lens is the right choice for you. These lenses enable dimensions to be measured precisely and allow you to detect small details, since their magnification is the the range of 1:1.

What distinguishes telecentric lenses?

With telecentric lenses, the size of the image object remains constant regardless of the distance to the object. This means that objects in a certain area of the field of view always have the same size on the image sensor, regardless of whether they are near or far.

In addition, with telecentric lenses, the light rays enter and exit parallel to the optical axis. This results in a distortion-free image.

Advantages of telecentric lenses

  • Constant field of view: Enables precise measurements since the size of the object in the image always remains the same.

  • Distortion-free imaging: Ideal for applications where a precise representation of the object is required, for example in industrial image processing or microscopy.

  • Reduced depth of field: Enables a sharp focus to be placed on a specific area of the object while the background remains blurred.

Application areas for telecentric lenses

Telecentric lenses are suitable for a wide range of applications that require precision and low distortion.

  • Industrial image processing: Product inspection, defect detection, and dimensional measurements

  • Microscopy: Observation and analysis of small objects

  • Measurement technology: Precise measurements of objects

Telecentric lenses with coaxial light coupling

Telecentric lenses with coaxial light coupling combine the function of a lens with an illumination unit.

Basler's portfolio of telecentric lenses with coaxial light coupling

Telecentric lenses with coaxial light coupling illuminate the object being viewed directly along the optical axis. A light source (often an LED) provides the light that is coupled in from the side and then directed into the optical axis with a semi-transparent mirror or beam splitter.

This design is particularly well suited for smooth or reflective surfaces and ensures high image quality when inspecting materials such as wafers, glass, metals, displays, and microchips.
