Motorized Lens Autofocus Solution with Flexibility in Zooming
What is it all about?
Typically, machine vision systems rely on cameras with fixed lenses that do not allow adjustments to their focal length, field of view, or zoom level. With the integration of a motorized lens, the camera can automatically adjust itself to accommodate diverse objects being inspected, regardless of their varying sizes and shapes.
Motorized lens autofocus is based on contrast detection of multiple images the camera acquires. When the camera with motorized lens zooms in under system command, it magnifies the subject so it’s easier for the vision system to detect the edges and details of the subject. This allows the camera to refine the focus and ensure that the subject is in sharp focus.
What was the problem?
There are different autofocus solutions in the market, and the two main challenges faced by machine builders and OEMs are how to choose a suitable solution and how to integrate it with minimal cost and effort.
The average re-focusing speed of a motorized lens autofocus system is around 5 seconds. It offers optical motor zoom function with required focal length range. In addition, IR cut filter options offered by motorized lenses can also be attractive for outdoor applications, such as ITS. To integrate a motorized lens AF system, it requires programming for lens control so it works with the camera in a coordinated way . Plus, developing autofocus algorithms is needed to do image analysis and “decide” where the best focus is.
The solution
Basler’s motorized lens autofocus vision solution is designed and intended to be used when occasional zooming and re-focusing is required. Typical applications include video surveillance, robotics and factory automation. And if you need a fast and continuous re-focusing solution for high-speed inspection lines, liquid lens autofocus solution is more suitable.
Your benefits
Integrated lens control in camera, so that you only need to work with one API, Basler pylon, instead of juggling different APIs.
Preloaded AF algorithm in camera, so that autofocus function can be achieved via camera configuration in pylon API instead of developing algorithm by yourself.
Flexibility in Zooming and IR cut filter options.
