Artificial Intelligence for an Automated Payment Terminal
How the automated payment terminal for retail works
To develop the live demo, our embedded vision team worked closely with NXP Semiconductors. The result is an automated retail payment terminal based on AI software. The embedded vision system identifies and classifies the products in the shopping basket and displays the respective prices. Customers can then select which products they would like to add to their shopping basket. A trained neural network then recognizes the products via the video stream and can then display the total price - the principle is similar to a facial recognition application.
More about our embedded vision solutionsWhat hardware does this retail solution work with?
The basis of our retail solution is the Basler Embedded Vision Kit, which is composed of the following components:
dart BCON for Basler's MIPI camera module
with the AR1335 sensor from onsemi
i.MX 8QuadMax SoC from NXP
i.MX 8QuadMax-based processing board
SMARC 2.0 carrier board
Thanks to this state-of-the-art on-device processing system, the demo setup already comes very close to the actual application. It includes all factors that are necessary for image processing.
More about our embedded vision solutionsWhat software is in the embedded vision system?
The software makes up an essential part of this application. It consists of two main components - the system software and the application software.
Let's look at the system software first: The various elements of the system software must be interconnected and form a coherent system for the embedded system to function at all. This is where Basler can leverage its many years of vision experience to combine software elements such as NXP's Yocto kernel and BSP into a lean embedded system.
Our AI application software is based on a custom Convolutional Neural Network (CNN). The model uses the latest deep learning and on-device processing techniques for fast and reliable response in a seamless scenario.
To the software for embedded visionWhat advantages does this retail solution offer retailers?
