What was the problem?
There are cases where the sole use of 3D information is not sufficient to correctly recognize and precisely position complex, angled or partially hidden objects. By cleverly combining 3D with 2D image information, Apera AI’s Vision manages to offer a solution here: The AI-powered Apera Vue vision platform enables industrial robots to perform a range of tasks that were previously considered infeasible.
The solution
What sets Apera AI’s Vue software apart from conventional 3D systems is its ability to operate faster and more precisely, with as low as a 0.3 second total vision cycle time and sub-millimeter precision. The system can do this under ambient light and can also effectively recognize complex or partially obscured objects. The system knows what it is looking for and can detect it using the cameras deployed in pairs. When selecting the cameras to be used, Apera opted for the Basler acA4024-29um USB 3.0 camera with the Sony IMX 226 CMOS sensor: The area scan camera delivers 31 frames per second at 12.2 MP resolution. In addition, Apera used the high-resolution Basler Premium Lenses with C-mount, ideal for analyzing the smallest structures. The cameras provide a 2D stereo image, from which the Apera AI system creates a 3D image - and can thus precisely position even partially obscured parts in a jumbled scene.
