5x5-Debayering
Debayering algorithms work by drawing in the color values from neighboring pixels to estimate missing colors. The dimension for this analysis depends on the number of surrounding pixels reviewed for each pixel. A radius of 2x2 neighboring pixels would be denominated as 2x2 environment, a radius of 4x4 pixels would be a 4x4 environment, respectively. The more neighboring pixels are taken into account, the more precise the color rendering in an image becomes, preventing color errors. The PGI debayering algorithm works with a 5x5 environment.
For technical reasons, a 4x4 debayering is used for some sensors / models.

Basler design-in sample | design-in sample
Basler design-in samples are early versions of products. They can be used to evaluate a product’s basic performance and consider if it is suitable to be integrated into an application.
Until the series production of the product, the software can change. In rare cases the hardware will also be changed.
Once series products are available, Basler ships only those products.
The number of available design-in samples is limited, so there are no set delivery times.
Basler design-in samples offer a 1-year instead of 3-year warranty.
In some manuals the word “prototype” is used for design-in samples.

Bayer BG 12 / Bayer GB 12
Both the “Bayer BG 12” and “Bayer GB 12” are formats for transmitting image data. When a color camera is configured for BG 12 / Bayer GB 12 pixel data format, 2-bytes (16 bits) of data per pixel are issued, with 12 effective bits. The brightness information is included in the 12 lowest-value bits, while the 4 highest-value bits are filled with zeros. The pixel data are not processed or interpolated in the Bayer BG12 format, i.e. the raw data is used.
The sequence of data in the Bayer BG12 format orients itself in the process to the alignment of color pixels on the sensor in the form of the Bayer pattern. Within the Bayer pattern, the rows alternate between lines of green and blue pixels and lines of red and green pixels. That means for example in the Bayer BG 12 format that one 12-bit value is transmitted for each blue and green pixel along a row. It is then followed by a 12-bit value for each green and red pixel in the next row, and so on, until all rows of the color sensor have been read out.
The sole difference between the Bayer BG 12 format and Bayer GB 12 format is that the data transferred in the Bayer BG 12 format starts with a blue pixel, while the GB12 format starts with a green one.

Bayer BG 12 Packed / Bayer BG 12 p
The “Bayer BG 12 Packed / Bayer BG 12 p” is a data format for transmitting image data. When a color camera is configured for BG 12 Packed pixel data format, 12 bits of data per pixel are issued. The data for 2 pixels is packed into 3 bytes. This saves 4 bits of bandwidth per pixel compared with the unpacked Bayer BG12 format. In the Bayer BG 12 Packed format, the pixel data is neither processed nor interpolated, meaning the raw data is used.
The sequence of data in the Bayer BG12 Packed format orients itself in the process to the alignment of color pixels on the sensor in the form of the Bayer pattern. Within the Bayer pattern, the rows alternate between lines of green and blue pixels and lines of red and green pixels. That means for example in the BG 12 Packed format that one 12-bit value is transmitted for each green and blue pixel along a row. It is then followed by a 12-bit value for each red and green pixel in the next row, and so on, until all rows of the color sensor have been read out.

Bayer BG 8 / Bayer GB 8
Both the “Bayer BG 8” and “Bayer GB 8” are formats for transmitting image data. When a color camera is configured for the BG 8 / Bayer GB 8 pixel data format, 8 bits of data per pixel are issued. The sequence of data orients itself in the process to the alignment of color pixels on the sensor in the form of the Bayer pattern. Within the Bayer pattern, the rows alternate between lines of green and blue pixels and lines of red and green pixels. That means for example in the Bayer BG8 format that one 8-bit value is transmitted for each blue and green pixel along a row. It is then followed by an 8 bit value for each green and red pixel in the next row, and so on, until all rows of the color sensor have been read out. The pixel data are not processed or interpolated in the process. As such, the Bayer BG8 and GB8 formats are so-called raw data formats.
The sole difference between the Bayer BG 8 format and Bayer GB 8 format is that the data transferred in the Bayer BG 8 format starts with a blue pixel, while the GB8 format starts with a green one.

CoaXPress | CXP
CoaXPress (CXP)

Color-Anti-Aliasing
Color errors, especially on sharp edges, are a common side effect of less effective debayering algorithms. They become much more frequent and prominent in sections where an image has high spatial frequencies. These arise for example when the distances between black and white lines are so tight that they are placed in neighboring pixels, or at sharp edges with one light and one dark side. PGI Color-Anti-Aliasing analyzes and corrects discolorations for all potential frequencies below the theoretical limit, the Nyquist frequency.
자세한 내용 Color-Anti-Aliasing -
Color Creation
An image sensor is only capable of delivering grey values. To obtain color information, each pixel of the sensor is covered by a color filter allowing the pixel to deliver the gray value for the color of its color filter (primary colors). To obtain full color information, color filters of different colors (e.g. red, green, blue) are used. They are assigned to the sensor's pixels in a regular pattern (e.g. forming the Bayer pattern) such that neighboring pixels are covered by color filters of different primary colors. For example, the nearest neighbors of a "green" pixel are "red" and "blue" pixels. The gray values for the primary colors not measured can then be interpolated for each pixel from the gray values delivered by the neighboring pixels. As an alternative to using color filters of different colors on a single sensor, different sensors can be used where each one is covered by a color filter of only one color.
자세한 내용 Color Creation -
Color filter

Debayering
A standard image sensor will initially only produce black-and-white images. Color images require the use of a color matrix. The most well-known and frequently used matrix is the Bayer pattern, featured in a process known as Bayering. It involves the composition of a mosaic using the color pixels, although the color values for that mosaic are actually incomplete. To produce a proper color image, those color values are reconstructed using a complicated algorithm. This process is known as demosaicing or, named after the Bayer pattern, debayering.
Debayering can either be performed directly within the camera's firmware or afterward in post-production using the raw data. For industrial applications, debayering via firmware is recommended.

Denoising
Noise is an unavoidable part of any image and originates from several sources such as Photon Shot Noise, image sensor noise, or local noise. Typically, there are many calculation steps required between a raw image and a finished color image. Each of these computational steps can reduce, or - in most cases - reinforce the noise. PGI denoising avoids this magnification by executing these operations parallel to one another.

Ethernet
Ethernet is a family of computer networking technologies for local area networks (LANs) commercially introduced in 1980. Standardized in IEEE 802.3, Ethernet has largely replaced competing wired LAN technologies.
Systems communicating over Ethernet divide a stream of data into individual packets called frames. Each frame contains source and destination addresses and error-checking data so that damaged data can be detected and re-transmitted.
The standards define several wiring and signaling variants. The original 10BASE5 Ethernet used coaxial cable as a shared medium. Later the coaxial cables were replaced by twisted pair and fiber optic links in conjunction with hubs or switches. Data rates were periodically increased from the original 10 megabits per second, to 100 gigabits per second.
Since its commercial release, Ethernet has retained a good degree of compatibility. Features such as the 48-bit MAC address and Ethernet frame format have influenced other networking protocols.

Event Reporting
"Event Reporting" is a feature used by the camera under certain conditions to produce an event while controlling image capture. A corresponding event report is then sent to the PC.
Events can include "overtriggering," for example. The condition for that event would be that the camera receives a trigger signal to record an image but is not yet ready to capture the image. In this case the camera sends a corresponding event notification to the PC.
자세한 내용 Event Reporting -
Exposure Active Signal
The "Exposure Active Signal" is a digital signal issued via the camera's output port to control the image capture.
The Exposure Active Signal is issued (generally speaking: set to "High") once the exposure time for the image capture starts. The signal is deactivated again when the exposure time ends. The Exposure Active Signal can for example be used as the trigger for a flash and is also helpful if used with a system where the camera or the object is moved between two shots. As a measure against motion blur, the signal can be evaluated to avoid movement during exposure.

Flash Window Signal
The “Flash Window Signal” is a digital signal send by the camera to control external light sources. The Flash Window Signals indicates the state of image capture for a camera using a rolling shutter. The signal serves to mark the time window within which a light pulse (such as from a flash device) must be triggered to be effective for capturing the image on the entire sensor.
The signal activates when the time window for the light pulse begins and switches back to inactive when it ends. For a rolling shutter, flash-style lighting can help avoid the rolling shutter effect on moving objects.

GenICam™
GenICam is a standard of the European Machine Vision Association (EMVA) allowing to control machine vision cameras via a generic programming interface independent of the type of interface used for data transmission (e.g. GigE Vision, FireWire, Camera Link, USB), camera type and image format. This approach makes it easy to connect cameras compliant with the GenICam standard without the need for camera-specific configurations.
The core of GenICam is a description of the camera's properties in an XML Descriptor File. Using this file, a translator directly generates an Application Programming Interface called GenAPI or the elements of a Graphical User Interface (GUI). This lets the user easily access the features and functions available on the camera. GenTL, a module of GenICam, provides a unified mechanism for grabbing and streaming images from the camera. The GigE Vision standard requires that cameras with a GigE interface provide the XML Descriptor File. A Descriptor File for Basler’s IEEE 1394 compliant cameras is available as well.

Gigabit Ethernet (GigE) defines a tethered protocol for data transfer based on the widespread Ethernet standard. Gigabit Ethernet currently offers the widest technological flexibility with regard to bandwidth, cable length, and multi-camera functionality. It allows for up to 100 m length for individual cables, power supply via the data cable (PoE), and a data rate of 1000 Mbit/s. Gigabit Ethernet is the fastest growing interface for digital cameras in the field of industrial image processing. It is a universally applicable digital interface, which for the first time provides the potential to produce cameras that can replace analog devices in almost every application.
In addition to the physical interface defined by the Gigabit Ethernet standard (among others), the especially clear and logical implementation of the GigE Vision Standard supports easy integration in all image processing programs via the use of software “libraries”. Also, because the exchange of GigE Vision compatible cameras can be performed without changing the application software, new investments and follow-up costs can be estimated and well-planned with cameras based on the GigE Vision Standard. It is the right choice for data rates of up to 100 MByte/s and makes complex setups with several cameras very simple.

H.264
H.264 is a standard for video compression. H.264 compression has become mainstream and is offered on almost every IP camera and recording server today. H.264 has bridged the large gap between MJPEG (high quality, high bandwidth, and high storage consumption) and MPEG-4 (lower quality, low bandwidth, and low storage consumption). H.264 also has a second “layer” of options known as “profiles”. These profiles offer different codec efficiencies and will affect the overall quality of the transmitted video as well as the bandwidth and storage consumption. Today, different H.264 profiles are available. Only three of these are common in surveillance applications: Baseline profile (BP), Main profile (MP), and High profile (HiP). Each manufacturer must decide which of these profiles will be offered with their cameras.

HD
HD or 720p describes the lowest resolution defined in the television standard for High Definition TV. "720" stands for the vertical resolution in lines (or rows of pixels). The letter p defines the transmission and display via progressive scan (in contrast to interlaced scan). Assuming an aspect ration of 16:9, the horizontal resolution of 720p is 1280 pixels.

High Profile
A specific H.264 profile used in high definition Blu-Ray movies. It is much more efficient than either Baseline or Main profile. High profile will produce very robust video and fewer compression artifacts than either of the other two profiles. The processing requirements for the video encoder in the camera are higher than the other profiles, but the bandwidth and storage savings are very high.

ICX618 Replacement Camera
A replacement camera lets you replace an older camera in the system or end application without necessarily requiring further hardware changes or major adaptations in the configuration or imaging geometry.
To make this possible, the sensor size and resolution of the replacement camera must correspond to those of the old camera. Additionally, the replacement camera must generate nearly identical image data in the same imaging conditions as the camera it replaces. Of course, the mechanical interfaces of the replacement camera must also be compatible with those of camera to be replaced.
The Basler ace U camera acA640-121gm is the first 1:1 replacement camera in the market that has the same image properties of cameras with the discontinued Sony CCD sensor ICX618.

IEEE1394 (FireWire)
Cameras with FireWire or IEEE1394 ports have been on the market since the 90s and are used in many machine vision applications. The FireWire name is actually Apple's trademarked designator for the standard. The cameras were originally outfitted based on IEEE1394a. This standard set a broadband limit of 32 MB/s, enough for smooth transfer of a data volume of roughly 30s images per second at 1 megapixel of resolution. The IEEE1394b current standard works with twice that much bandwidth. Cables and hardware are standardized and widely available. For this reason the use of IEEE1394 interfaces can in many cases reduce system costs.
In the medium term IEEE1394 is expected to lose its importance for the PC market, and compliant hardware will correspondingly become more difficult to find.

IR-cut filter
An infrared cut filter (IR-cut filter) is used to block light with wavelengths longer than visible light while transmitting visible light. IR cut filters can operate by either reflecting or absorbing the light to be blocked. IR cut filters are often used in solid state (CCD or CMOS) video cameras to block infrared light, which otherwise causes a lowering of the contrast due to the high sensitivity of many camera sensors to near-infrared light. IR cut filters for this purpose are mostly operating by reflecting the IR portion of the light.

Mono 12
The “Mono 12” is a data format for transmission of image data on monochrome cameras. When a monochrome camera is configured for Mono 12 format, 2 bytes (16 bits) of brightness data per pixel are issued, with 12 effective bits. The brightness information is included in the 12 lowest-value bits, while the 4 highest-value bits are filled with zeros. The pixel data are not processed or interpolated in the Mono 12 format, i.e. the raw data is used.

Mono 12 Packed / Mono 12 p
The “Mono 12 Packed / Mono 12 p” is a data format for transmission of image data on monochrome cameras. When a monochrome camera is configured for Mono 12 Packed format, 12 bits of brightness data per pixel are issued. The data for 2 pixels is packed into 3 bytes. This saves 4 bits of bandwidth per pixel compared with the unpacked Mono 12 format. In the Mono 12 Packed format, the pixel data is neither processed nor interpolated, meaning the raw data is used.
The data in the Mono 12 Packed format is output line for line in the sequence of the pixels on the camera.

PoE | Power over Ethernet
PoE (Power over Ethernet) technology describes a system to pass low voltage electrical power safely, along with data, on Ethernet cabling. The IEEE standard for PoE requires category 5 cable or higher for high power levels, but can operate with category 3 cable for low power levels.[1] Power is supplied in common mode over two or more of the differential pairs of wires found in the Ethernet cables and comes from a power supply within a PoE-enabled networking device such as an Ethernet switch or can be injected into a cable run with a midspan power supply.

Signal-to-Noise Ratio
Signal-to-noise ratio (often abbreviated SNR or S/N) is a measure used in science and engineering that compares the level of a desired signal to the level of background noise. It is defined as the ratio of signal power to the noise power. A ratio higher than 1:1 indicates more signal than noise. While SNR is commonly quoted for electrical signals, it can be applied to any form of signal (such as isotope levels in an ice core or biochemical signaling between cells).
