Measuring Safety-critical Components in the Automotive Industry

Quality evaluations using optical measuring techniques have become an established routine in the automotive industry. One of the many applications the German company BHV-Automation has developed, is BHV-Ivision, an image processing system with Basler scout GigE cameras that measures the plug contacts and other parts of the ignition initiator units for airbag gas generators.

The system determines and checks

  • the position of the plug contact tips
  • the torque angle of the tip unit
  • the gap distance of the riveting
  • the position/color and shape of the plug unit.

All measured parts are correct within 1/100th mm. BHV also developed a threshold value adjustment process that allows the system to measure tips which differ strongly in their reflectance and their surface qualities.

Basler scout cameras were chosen for compact size, their industrial grade design, and their ability to transmit data at GigE speeds. Because a GigE network can operate with cable lengths of up to 100 meters using shielded Cat 6 cables and packetized data transmission, customers don't have to worry about cable lengths and placement.
