Goods Logistics for Industry 4.0 Using the TORU Picking-Robot and Basler ace Camera

Industry 4.0 is increasingly focused on small unit counts. Both eCommerce and intralogistics, like in the automotive industry, for example, are designing processes for individual products, not entire pallets. These workflows have traditionally required human workers to pick those single units from their warehouse locations. Now robots are ready to help out.

The Munich-based company Magazino developed TORU, an intelligent picking-robot. To date human workers have been needed to pick the individual objects from storage. Robots simply weren‘t advanced enough to handle the task. The picking process is one of the most difficult tasks in robotics. TORU uses a camera for precise measurement and detection of objects followed by secure grasping of the individual product. The camera works as the robot’s eye and makes it possible in combination with a cross-laser for the robot to locate individual objects in the shelf, measure them and then grasp them.
