Dust Protection – for Applications with Special Cleanliness Requirements

Applications from Medical & Life Sciences place high demands on the imaging component as well as on cleanliness. For example, high magnifications are common in microscopy, so dust and other particles interfere and disrupt the optical path. Our Basler MED ace cameras leave production free of contamination but foreign objects can enter the optical path during transport and daily handling. We have designed our models with the MED Feature Set Dust Protection so that the optical path is free of dust and other particles at all times.

Dust Protection in a Nutshell

  • Sealing of the sensor room
  • Separate cleanroom production
  • Strict inspection for dust and other particles
  • High level of robustness in daily use

Sensor Room Sealing to Protect the Optical Path

Sensor Room Sealing to Protect the Optical Path

Basler MED ace cameras with the MED Feature Set Dust Protection have an optimized hardware design. The IR cut filter is firmly embedded in these models. We also minimize the sensor room with a sealing between the IR cut filter and the sensor. This reduces the risk of dust and other particles getting into the optical path during transport or daily handling – so what is clean stays clean.

Separate Production in the Cleanroom

Separate Production in the Cleanroom

In order to meet the special cleanliness requirements in Medical & Life Sciences, we pay strict attention to cleanliness when manufacturing Basler MED ace cameras: The camera is installed in a separate cleanroom and only by specially trained employees. We also regularly check and document the number of particles in the air. If the particle load is too high, the camera is not installed. We instead clean and check the filter system and measure the number of air particles again.

Continuous Inspection for Dust and Other Particles

We manufacture all of our Basler MED ace cameras in a separate cleanroom. We not only keep an eye on the number of particles in the air. For the models with the MED Feature Set Dust Protection, we check various components during assembly and in the final inspection the entire camera for dust and other particles. We examine both the sensor and the IR cut filter and clean the components if necessary. We examine the finished camera in our Camera Test Tool.

High Level of Robustness in Daily Use

Our Basler MED ace cameras are durable and robust. They can be easily installed in various applications and are also suitable if the cameras are to be mounted alternately on different devices such as microscopes. Thanks to the sealed sensor room, dust and other particles do not settle in the optical path that is inaccessible to the customer during handling. And if it should ever be necessary, the filter can be cleaned without contaminating the sensor.

Dust Protection: for Special Cleanliness Requirements in Microscopy

Dust Protection: for Special Cleanliness Requirements in Microscopy

Microscopy applications are used to examine and analyze the finest structures in detail. The cameras used must deliver razor-sharp, high-resolution images. Dust and other particles in the optical path can distort the images and make analysis difficult. Our Basler MED ace cameras with the MED Feature Set Dust Protection meet the highest cleanliness requirements and are therefore ideal for microscopy applications.

Low Light Imaging – Excellent Images Even in Low Light Conditions

Typical Medical & Life Sciences applications such as microscopy and laboratory automation require image processing in low light conditions. The Basler MED ace with the MED Feature Set Low Light Imaging is made for it. The cameras not only have modern and powerful CMOS sensor technology, they are also characterized by our mode for long exposure times and the integrated histogram functions.

This Is What Low Light Imaging Offers You

  • High light sensitivity of the camera in the mode for long exposure times
  • Adjustments to the color ranges with integrated histogram functions
  • Firmware settings directly on the FPGA of the Basler MED ace camera

Get to know the Basler MED ace series

The Long Exposure Mode and the Integrated Histogram Functions Improve Low Light Images

Best Image Quality with Long Exposure Times

Selected applications from Medical & Life Sciences such as fluorescence microscopy and detection require exposure times of up to 10 seconds. The image quality often suffers. Not so with the Basler MED ace: Models with the MED Feature Set Low Light Imaging offer a mode for optimizing the image quality with long exposure times. This results in a high sensitivity of the camera, which detects even weak light signals. In the image, this leads to fewer hot pixels and less noise.

Best Contrast Thanks to Integrated Histogram Functions

Weak light signals make it difficult to produce good images in which the recorded objects are sharply defined. We put an end to this with our integrated histogram functions: shifting the hue ranges allows you to control the black point in the image and provides a crystal-clear black background. The extension of the hue ranges expands the histogram to achieve the best possible contrast. Another plus: the firmware settings run on the camera's FPGA and thus save considerable computing resources on the customer's host site.

Low Light Imaging: Despite Poor Lighting Conditions in Microscopy and Laboratory Automation

Weak light signals make it difficult to produce good images with sharp contrasts. Applications such as fluorescence microscopy and molecular diagnostic laboratory automation face this problem. The MED Feature Set Low Light Imaging of our Basler MED ace cameras offers a solution. The high sensitivity of the cameras, the mode for long exposure times and the integrated histogram functions lead to images with the best contrast and low noise.

CMOS Sensor Technology for High Frame Rates

CMOS Sensor Technology for High Frame Rates

The CMOS sensor technology of our Basler MED ace cameras is ideal for applications in medicine, medical technology and life sciences – even better than the CCD sensor technology. Why? CCD sensors move the electrons of light-sensitive pixels to a central readout amplifier before they are read. In contrast, CMOS sensors process the electrons directly in each pixel so that all sensor pixels are read simultaneously. They are characterized by high frame rates due to the shorter readout time. Their lower power consumption also leads to reduced heat development and less noise if the sensors do not receive additional cooling.

USB 3.0 for Fast and Reliable Data Transfer

Laboratory automation applications require high and stable data transfer rates. The USB 3.0 interface and the USB3 Vision standard are particularly suitable for this. This is because USB 3.0 reaches data rates of up to 350 MB/s. For comparison: A USB 2.0 interface offers 45 MB/s and a GigE interface up to 100 MB/s. USB 3.0 is an industry-proven plug & play interface. It is very fast, reliable and offers long-term availability. The USB3 Vision standard standardizes connections and makes image transfer more secure. Hardware and accessories that are USB3 Vision-compliant are tested and certified according to the requirements of the standard. This ensures that all components interact smoothly.

Global Shutter Sensor Technology for the Detection of Moving Objects

Global Shutter Sensor Technology for the Detection of Moving Objects

When choosing a camera, in addition to the decision regarding a CMOS or CCD sensor, a decision must also be made about its shutter variant. The global and the rolling shutter sensor have different shutter technologies that determine the type of exposure of the object to be captured: With the rolling shutter, exposure is carried out line by line. Distortions often occur when moving objects are recorded, resulting in a rolling shutter effect. With the global shutter, light hits the entire sensor surface at the same time. The object is exposed in quick succession. Global shutter sensors are therefore particularly suitable for applications with fast-moving objects such as in laboratory automation.
