3D Vision-Guided Robotics in the Bakery Industry

Pick-and-place robot in a large bakery

KINE Robotics, a Finnish provider of customized turnkey robotics solutions, relies on the blaze 3D Time-of-Flight camera to build an automated conveyor tracking system in a large industrial bakery.

The system, which was developed together with OEM Finland, enables a robot to securely grip bags of bread loaves and rolls of different sizes and shapes on the conveyor belt and place them in transport boxes. Using the vision system consisting of the Basler blaze 3D Time-of-Flight camera and Matrox Design Assistant X image processing software, the robot learns the exact position and orientation of the packages on the conveyor belt. Compared to 2D technology, the 3D vision system precisely detects the position and orientation of the packages regardless of light, color and contrast.

This allowed KINE Robotics to eliminate the need for an additional light source, resulting in a lean and fast system with reduced overall system costs.
