Inspired by Raptors: An Efficient Traffic Monitoring System with Basler ace USB 3.0 Cameras
The number of automobiles around the world has increased tremendously. As a result, the demand for efficient and reliable traffic monitoring systems has become inevitable, to reduce the growing numbers of speeding violations causing fatal accidents and injuries.
In Singapore, the currently-used Doppler effect-based LIDAR/RADAR speed detection systems have several drawbacks. One of them is that the movement of large vehicles can cause interference phenomena leading to inaccurate speed readings. As well, the image taken by the camera, which is triggered by the speed detector, can contain multiple vehicles at the same time and there is no reliable way to pinpoint which vehicle was speeding.
The Control and Simulation Research Group at National University of Singapore has developed a reliable vision-based traffic monitoring system known as ‘Raptor Vision’. The system is inspired by the visual structure found in raptors, which have simultaneous near-field and far-field viewing capabilities. Basler ace USB 3.0 cameras
play an important role in this system.
