Goods Logistics for Industry 4.0: Basler ace Camera Supports Picking-Robots
Industry 4.0 is increasingly focused on small unit counts. Both eCommerce and intralogistics, like in the automotive industry, for example, are designing processes for individual products, not entire pallets. These workflows have traditionally required human workers to pick those single units from their warehouse locations. Now robots are ready to help out.
Munich-based Magazino has created TORU, a picking-robot, for precisely that purpose. TORU is a mobile robot that can work alongside humans on picking orders in warehouses. An inventory control system sends the pick job wirelessly to the robot, which then moves to the respective storage location. After successful identification using a 'sheet-of-light' process, TORU grasps the object and brings it automatically to the desired destination.
The sheet-of-light process involves a cross-laser projecting two laser lights onto an object to measure it. A 2D camera, in this case a Basler ace camera, records the reflected laser beams and measures the object based on the position of the lines on the camera image.
