Basler Will Add a New Auto Features Suite to the Basler scout and pilot Camera Series
Basler has successfully tested an Auto Features Suite in a variety of customer applications in Europe, Asia, and the United States. Based on these results, we have decided to begin implementing the suite into the firmware for both
Basler scout and
Basler pilot series cameras. This major addition will cover more than 80 camera models and will be included in all variants such as cameras with a 90° housing and cameras featuring a CS-Mount option. “This set of features includes the functionalities most demanded by our customers and will lift scout and pilot cameras to a new level of convenience”, says Henning Tiarks, Product Manager for Basler Components.
The Auto Features Suite consists of three main new functionalities:
Auto Gain Control and Auto Exposure Control
With these features, a camera can adjust its gain or exposure time settings automatically based on a defined reference area of interest. The camera adjusts the gain or exposure time settings by reading the pixel data from captured images and making any adjustments needed to achieve a target grey value. For even more convenience, the user can define limits on the allowed adjustments. This results in less noise and even higher image quality. As specified in the GenICam standard, the automatic adjustments can be applied once ("one push") or applied continuously.
Auto White Balancing
For optimal color responsivity, all Basler scout and pilot color cameras models will be equipped with an automatic white balancing function that can be initiated by a simple command issued via software.
How does the Auto Features Suite work?
All auto features are based on algorithms designed to realize better imaging results. In the example shown below, the original image was captured by a user. The user wanted the gain to be automatically adjusted to produce a brighter image based on a certain area within the captured images. An optimized algorithm calculated a new value for the gain and the resulting image is significantly brighter. This type of auto adjustment can be performed continuously both for the gain and for the exposure time.
Leveraging the GenICam advantage
The new auto features are GenICam compatible and are realized dynamically inside of the camera. This means that these new features can be accessed by existing
Basler pylon installations without the need to reinstall or upgrade the pylon software. It also means that customer applications based on the most recent pylon version, or an older version, can access and use the Auto Features Suite. This saves time for integration, lets users work within a consistent driver environment, and provides access to the newest functions.
Basler will offer these features on all scout and pilot cameras produced after the end of July 2008. If you need samples earlier, you want series production units, or you would like more information, please contact your Basler sales partner.
