The next release of the
Basler pylon software package will have a version number of 2.0. After the smooth introduction and positive feed back regarding the pylon 1.0 release, we focused on improving ease-of-use and "quality strengths" such as reliability and stability.
One major advantage of the next pylon version will be the added support for GigE Vision line scan cameras such as Basler’s new runner camera family. Based on our extensive use of GenICam technology, the pylon API will work with one or more runner cameras in much the same way as it does today for our
scout or
pilot GigE area scan cameras. And because a specific GenICam XML file can be associated with each type of camera, runner, scout, and pilot cameras can be used in the same system at the same time.
The replacement of the Microsoft stack that resides in the middle of pylon's IEEE 1394 driver touches on both easy-of-use and stability issues. Ever since Microsoft released service pack two for Windows XP, an elaborate rollback procedure has been required to get the full 800 MBit/s performance from any IEEE 1394-b devices on a system. In addition, the difficult timing requirements at full speed can damage data during transfer. To overcome the support issues regarding the Microsoft stack, pylon 2.0 will use an alternative driver stack rather than the Microsoft stack. With the new stack, a rollback is no longer required and support is continued for other IEEE 1394 devices such as hard drives.
Pylon64 for IEEE 1394 is a completely new module that will be launched with pylon 2.0. It allows applications to address a memory size greater than four GByte. Applications that collect and store a series of images before processing them are the focus of this new module. An additional module for 64 Bit GigE Vision support is planned for the next release after 2.0.
This announcement gives you only a small taste of what can be expected from the pylon 2.0 release. More details will be provided in the next newsletter, or you can visit our website in February for more information.
