Ophthalmology

Perfect image quality with optimal resolution and sensitivity

Sensitivity, reproducibility, consistency, and long service life as well as top image quality at optimal resolution are requirements for the imaging component of many imaging-based technologies for diagnosis and treatment of eyes.

Examples of use include surveying the visual field, measuring the corneal curvature, and determining the refraction, the detailed representation of the ocular fundus or modern ophthalmological surgery, such as a cataract operation.

Functional Diagnostics

Optimal image quality supports accurate diagnostics
Digital camera technology provides the basis for a number of methods for inspecting and diagnosing the morphology and function of the eye.

One of the most important diagnostic methods in ophthalmology is slit lamp microscopy. It is used to evaluate the conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, anterior chamber, iris, lens and anterior vitreous humor. Fundoscopy enables the posterior section of the eye to be inspected, particularly the retinal and choroid membrane structures and the optic nerve. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) provides three-dimensional images of vitreous humor and retinal structures quickly. Kerato-refractometers are used to determine wave front aberrations and corneal topographies as well as for pupillometry, keratometry and auto refraction. Diagnostics for visual field defects are performed by perimetry.

Basler cameras offer high-performance technology and support precise diagnostics in these areas.

Therapeutic Methods

Top reliability, high quality and sensitivity
In Germany alone, about 100,000 people undergo laser eye surgery each year. The prospects of living without glasses and contact lenses led to strong growth in the use of laser methods for example to correct near- or far-sightedness with LASIK and for laser-assisted glaucoma and cataract surgery as well. In these systems, Basler cameras provide the most reliable support of integrated diagnostics, process control for treatment or surgery as well as for monitoring laser performance.
