Ahrensburg, March 31st 2008 – Basler AG – one of the global leaders in Vision Technology – has received an order from AU Optronics, Taiwan – one of the world’s leading vendors of flat screen modules - for equipping two new Generation 7.5 / 8.5 production lines with color filter inspection systems. These systems monitor the quality of so-called “color filters” in the flat panel display glass. Color filters are wafer thin layers which enable the generation of color images on the flat screen.

The contract is worth over € 6 million, making it the single biggest order in the company’s 20 year history. Order processing will extend into the fiscal year 2009. The order once more underscores Basler’s technological leadership in inspection systems for structured and non-structured glass for the production of flat panel displays.

As Dr Michael Fuss, head of Basler’s Solutions division, comments, ”Our better quality technology has given Basler a leading edge in the tough competition-driven market of the display industry. We use our own proprietary developments in high-performance line cameras, image processing boards and LED-based illumination units. This technology is all extremely powerful and its very short cycles (high inspection speeds) and superb inspection performance has impressed our customer. Combined with the software which we optimized jointly with the customer to meet the special demands of the market, we now have a system which also gives us far more information on the production process than was possible with previous systems. This leads lower manufacturing costs for TFT displays. Beyond any doubt, a further reason for the follow-up order was the close customer relationship we have been able to build up in the past 18 months following the first order.”

Technology developed by Basler for the rapid, high resolution inspection of large glass substrate surfaces has been applied to the production of TFT glass. The same technologies are also used for inspection of coated glass for thin-film solar modules where Basler inspection systems check coated and non-coated glass substrates for micro-flaws such as scratches and hairline cracks.
