Basler's New sprint Series – The Solution When Throughput and Sensitivity Count
Ahrensburg, 07 November 2006 – With line rates up to 140 kHz at 2k or 4k resolution, Basler's sprint series cameras set a new standard for the line scan market. With outstanding sensitivity and an exceptionally high signal-to-noise ratio, these cameras will increase the efficiency of imaging applications. Features such as an area of interest (AOI) capability with linear speed increase, shading correction (flat field correction), and a Line Sum function make sprint cameras a powerful and flexible tool. The sprint series has been launched at the Vision Show 2006 in Stuttgart.

The Basler sprint series will extend Basler's current line scan product portfolio and ensure that our customers' needs continue to be met. Basler sprint cameras will lead users into the future by employing new technology and setting new standards in terms of speed and sensitivity.

A key element of the Basler sprint series is a new high-speed sensor developed for Basler. With this new sensor design, a line rate up to 140 kHz can be realized. This speed enables increased application throughput and object speed and ensures that the inspection system is not a limiting factor in customer applications. A resolution up to 4k pixels means that larger surface areas can be inspected in a shorter time or that smaller defects can be detected. The sensor's outstanding signal-to-noise ratio enables reliable and accurate detection. Limited light is often an issue, especially at high speeds, so the sensor provides exceptional sensitivity. This benefit was realized with a 10 µm x 10 µm pixel size and a novel pixel architecture concept.

In cameras the signal-to-noise-ratio is limited by photon shot noise. To improve this ratio, Basler developed the Line Sum feature which is based on a dual line. By double-scanning each line of the image, the number of collected photons per image pixel can be doubled without demand for more light. By averaging this data, the temporal noise will be reduced by 30% and the signal-to-noise-ratio will be improved by 3 dB.

The sprint's Camera Link interface is easy to configure and reliably transfers image data to the frame grabber at very high data rates.

The new housing is not only good looking and compact; it also helps to improve image quality by providing optimized sensor alignment. The perfect thermal coupling between the sensor and the heat sink keeps the sensor temperature low, reducing thermally induced noise.

Basler sprint cameras are perfect for use in applications such as:
Web inspection (wood, paper, foil, etc.)
Surface inspection (printed circuit boards, flat panels and displays, semiconductors, etc.)
Document scanning and postal sorting
Food inspection
