Basler Components is leading the effort to standardize image quality and sensitivity measurement for machine vision cameras and sensors. All measurements done by Basler will be in 100% compliance with the new European Machine Vision Association "EMVA 1288" standard. Because it describes a unified method to measure, compute, and present the specification parameters for cameras and image sensors used in machine vision applications, Basler is giving the EMVA 1288 standard our strongest support. In the future, we will routinely provide compliant information about the quality and sensitivity of our products.
The EMVA 1288 standard includes a well defined method for measuring most common noise sources. It also includes a mandatory and detailed description of measurement setups, environmental conditions, and test requirements. As a first step, only the standardization process for monochrome area scan cameras is covered. An expansion covering the standards for color area scan cameras and for line scan cameras is expected to follow.
A downloadable version of the first draft of the EMVA 1288 standard is available from the EMVA web site at

A Basler Components white paper called "Sensitivity and image Quality of Digital Cameras" gives you extended background information on the methods used in the standard . This document and some other interesting whitepapers about characterization of cameras and sensors can be downloaded here.
